HB-Green homes to earn carbon credits

‘Green’ homes to earn carbon credits

The lesser density of houses coupled with use of hollow concrete blocks and an underground tunnel ventilation to provide natural air-conditioning add to the carbon credit earning capacity.

Bangalore, Feb. 21 A local real estate company, which is implementing a residential complex under the ‘Green Concept’ has claimed that homes in the complex could earn carbon credits, while enjoying the usual benefits of considerable savings resulting from the ecologically friendly buildings using low energy emitting materials and concepts that gives accent to waste management.

Disclosing this at a press conference here Thursday, Biodiversity (India) Ltd said that the project, BCIL Collective, coming up in Yelehanka in North Bangalore, consists of 116 houses using ecologically sustainable lighting and air-conditioning system.

The lesser density of houses coupled with use of hollow concrete blocks and an underground tunnel ventilation to provide natural air-conditioning add to the carbon credit earning capacity.

Mr Chandrashekar Hariharan of Biodiversity said that the air-conditioning system uses night air to cool the rooms and hot afternoon air for active ventilation.

The complex, spread over three acres, has been designed to save 35,000 litres of water per home annually by focussing on rainwater harvesting and recycling within the residential complex. “Fresh water need is reduced by about 40 per cent, which amounts to about 40,000 litres saved per family a year”, Mr Hariharan said

Contribution in reducing the emission of greenhouse gases also comes from the induction of LED lighting system for the campus, while the homes would be using CFL system.

He dispelled the notion that ‘green’ houses are more capital intensive than the conventional properties and said it is cost-neutral but enjoy multiple benefits.
