At Home at Hand

  • Jan 2008

This edition brings you a few tips more, from naanimaa. Our grandmas sure know how to be eco-sensitive. Give these a try at home.

The Wonder Leaf
If your food seems extra salty, put a banana leaf over the vessel and cover. Steam it and cool. The leaf will absorb the extra salt.

Heat it with the Stuff
To clean a stained or dirty frying pain, sprinkle with cooking salt, heat on the stove, then clean off with a newspaper.

Rid the Dirt
While cleaning green leafy vegetables, add a few drops of vinegar or salt to the water. This way, it is easy to get rid of worms and dirt.

Salt that Spurns
Wipe the dining table with water to which a little table salt has been added. It will keep house flies away.

Shake, Don’t Stir
Add a few grains of rice to the salt-shaker to facilitate easier flow of salt.

Salt Stretches
Almost discharged leakproof cells can be rejuvenated by putting them overnight in salt solution [seven grams per litre of water].

Salt away the Dishes
A daub of salt is all you need to clean spoons stained by egg. Add a little salt to the cleaning powder when washing dishes.

Lime De-Rusts
Rust stains on fabric can be removed by dampening the stained area with lime juice and exposing the area to sunlight for an hour.

Paan Pains
To remove ‘paan’ stains, apply curd or lime juice on the stained fabric. The stain will soon fade away.
