No Impact Man
Peace in myself makes peace in the world
I've had this hammered home to me lately, that if I want to manifest peace in the world, I have to find peace in my mind.
They say a peaceful mind makes a peaceful man. A peaceful man makes a peaceful family. A peaceful family makes a peaceful village. A peaceful village makes a peaceful country. A peaceful country makes a peaceful world.
Peace. Kindness. Sustainability. It's all the same to me.
But the point is this, I can get all caught up in writing this blog and my environmental work and, in a way, get seduced by it all.
How do I want my little girl to spend her time
Shopping is America's second favorite pastime. According to Annie Leonard's Story of Stuff, we spend three to four times more time shopping than the average European. Only TV viewing racks up a larger portion of our leisure.
Why do we spend so much time shopping? Is it partly that the culture doesn't provide that much else to do? Certainly when I grew up, the mall was the big draw.
Had to take a day off folks, see you tomorrow.
9/27: Green Jobs Now National Day of Action
From the GreenJobsNow website:
On September 26, we will watch the first presidential debate of this election.
The next day, the candidates will watch us.
On Saturday, September 27, we're launching a national mobilization to say, "I'm ready for the green economy." We are ready to tackle the climate crisis by building a green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.
A question for you
You know how I wrote about the altercation I had with Senator Klein after he nearly hit me on my bike?
Well, that post went completely viral. Twenty thousand visitors read the post that day, many sites reposted it, and over 100 blogs linked to it.
Most importantly, 100s of people from across the country and even the world phoned Senator Klein's office to support my request for a meeting (read here).
Kind words, kind results; Angry words, angry results?
You'll know if you read the blog regularly that last week I had a close call on my bike with a New York State Senator who drove his car too close to me (read here). We had an altercation, but the good news is that we will have a meeting next week to discuss New York City transportation and traffic policy (read here).
